The Write Thing

Remembrances

Waking up to the smell of breakfast cooking
A warm kitchen
A flowered apron, combs in her hair
A giggle and a smile
A quick wit
Granddaddy sipping coffee from his saucer
Churned butter
Fresh milk
Blackberry jelly
Trips to the blackberry bushes
Plants and flowers on the porch and in the yard
Fruit trees; figs and scuppernongs
Cakes and pies
But making sure Granddaddy watched his sweets
Rockers
A front porch swing
Peace and quiet
Afternoon naps
Waiting for the rolling store
Flour in a flowered bag
The change dish on the sideboard
Nickels for candy
A table for treasures
A photo box
Handmade quilts
Recognizing the patches as some of our clothes
Friends stopping by for a visit
Telling a good story
A good memory for detail
Little House on the Prairie and Chips
Helping Granddaddy walk around the table to keep active
Butter beans
Peanuts
Dumplings
Sharing the bounty
And, when it was time to leave,
No long goodbyes
A tender heart
A tear in her eye
A tear in mine
'Til we meet again...

In loving memory of my Grandmother, Mary Ellen Congleton Smith
Known to many as Miss Mollie
Known to us as Bigmama.
